The Mayor of London is responsible for making London a better place for everyone who visits, lives or works in the city. Find out how the Mayor brings the people of London together in order to deliver the shared aim of growth.
Changing London for the better
The Mayor wants London to be a “city for all Londoners”. The work of the Mayor makes it easier for people to navigate the city; improves London’s environment; supports the growth of London’s businesses; provides more affordable housing for Londoners; and creates more opportunities for young people in London.
The Mayor outlines a vision for London. His duty is to create plans and policies for the capital which includes arts and culture; business and economy; environment; fire; health; housing and land; planning; policing and crime; regeneration; sport; transport; and young people.
The Mayor has an annual budget of £20.7bn which is invested into public transport, fire services and policing as well as the work of City Hall. The budget is financed from a combination of central government grants, transport fares and other charges, business rates and council tax.
In line with his commitment to improve London, the Mayor invests in and collaborates with a variety of different people and organisations to achieve this aim.
